Abstract

Abstract. This article aimed to uncover the true meaning of the curse to the fig tree written in Mark 11:12-14. By the historical criticism, the author tried to explain the reasoning of Jesus’ action in cursing the fig tree and answer the many difficulties when facing the text. The results of the analysis showed that the curse of the fig tree was a symbolic act that emphasized the importance of the faith growth of every believer as a consequence living under God’s rule as well as a stern warning of punishment for every believer who is reluctant to grow and bear fruit.

Abstrak. Artikel ini bertujuan mengungkap makna sebenarnya narasi kutukan terhadap pohon ara yang tercata dalam Markus 11:12-14. Dengan menggunakan metode kritik historis, penulis hendak menjelaskan alasan-alasan sentral dibalik tindakan Yesus yang mengutuk pohon ara dan menjawab berbagai kesulitan yang dialami ketika membaca dan memahami peristiwa ini. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa kutukan pohon ara adalah sebuah tindakan simbolis untuk menandaskan pentingnya pertumbuhan iman setiap orang percaya sebagai konsekuensi hidup di bawah pemerintahan Allah sekaligus sebagai peringatan keras akan hadirnya penghukuman bagi setiap orang percaya yang enggan bertumbuh dan berbuah.
